COMMON CAUSES OF ROOF DAMAGE

  1. Trees: Trees and low hanging branches are generally the main cause of roof damage. Branches that hang over roofs can have a high risk of breaking because of decay or harsh weather and puncturing your roof. Trees will also produce debris such as leaves, pine cones, and sap that when constantly falling on your roof can cause it to age faster.

  2. Weather: Another common cause of roof damage is the weather. Your roof’s main goal is to protect your home from the elements, so it makes sense that it causes a good deal of damage. Weather can include everything from rain, hail, snow, and wind storms ripping of shingles, to persistent hot weather drying out your shingles causing them to crack.

  3. Birds/Pests: Animals such as birds, mice, and even squirrels will often find their way into your roof for shelter. Be sure to fill all entrances because many can squeeze through holes as small as dimes. Insects such as ants and termites can also get into your roof and cause serious damages.

  4. Faulty Gutters: While gutters are designed to transport water away from your home, they can sometimes lead to more damages if not installed properly or clogged. This can cause water to back up and weaken the roofing material.

  5. Water Damage: Along with faulty gutters, other water damages can come from small holes in shingles, or siding. Once water damage begins, it is important to fix as soon as possible to avoid further structural damages or mold growth.

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOUR ROOF NEEDS REPAIRS?

If your roof is a shingle roof, look for shingles that are curling, cracking, or missing. This indicates the shingles are reaching the end of their lifespan and should be replaced. Wet, dark, or dirty shingles may mean the shingles are trapping water and not doing their job. Shingle granules in the gutters indicate an issue as well.

Look for any wear and tear around the chimney, vents, and pipes also. Blistering and peeling paint can mean poor ventilation in the attic. Check the roof deck for sagging, as this also means it’s holding moisture.

Finally, there are some things to check for inside your home to indicate roof damage. Staining on your walls and ceilings can result from water dripping down from the roof. If rain is getting into your attic, a roofing problem may be present, but it could just be an issue with the flashing. If beams of light are coming into your attic on sunny days, that means water can come in too. Increased energy costs are also a sure sign of a roofing issue, as cool or warm air may be leaking out through the roof.
